Hey everyone, I'm Deegan and I'm a professional comic book artist and illustrator.

And today I'm going to be drawing an epic scene from Invincible Season 3 Episode 4 for you guys,

With every piece of art that I create, I always start by thinking about the overall composition

and poses of the characters. You can see here I started by sketching some basic wireframes

My process, especially in the comic book industry, is a little unorthodox.

Most artists after sketching their wireframes and base layout will begin very roughly sketching the characters in pencil,

I initially started by doing an open mouth almost yelling expression

But I found that it wasn't conveying the emotion that I just talked about wanting to convey

So I scrapped that whole thing and started working on a more sinister excited smile

I'm glad that I did because this second expression that I drew was exactly what I was going for

I really took my time on all the details and little intricacies of his face

And then I moved on to the Viltrumite, refining his line work and anatomy and overall pose.

He really is secondary to Battle Beast here, but even though he's not the focal point,

Now that I had the base bodies of my two characters drawn, I started focusing on drawing their

Now that I have the colors for my two characters pretty well set, it was time to start figuring

As you can see, I went through many, many different color combinations, special effects, ideas.

I finally settled on a yellow and red gradient, and then I outlined both characters in a contrast

Then I started adding in what we call in comics, action lines.

Here I decided to change where the action lines were emanating from, the focal point

This was a pretty pivotal point in the process where I decided to zoom the camera in a little

For any of us fans who have watched this fight, or any fight from Invincible for that matter,

And from an artistic perspective, it's such an amazing way to add motion, contrast, and stakes to a scene.

Having bits of splatter flying off the back of Battle Beast's hands and from the corners of his mouth

And you can see adding in bright highlights really helps make it look like a liquid and gives it that shininess

At this point I was really in the home stretch and kind of just playing around with little tweaks adding in bits and pieces here

really just trying to add as many bells and whistles as I could and
