It's not all that uncommon

Não é tão incomum assim

to lose some of your hearing as you get older.

In fact, about 20% of people in the US

have some form of hearing loss.

têm alguma forma de perda auditiva.

But why?

Mas por quê?

How does hearing work?

Como funciona a audição?

And why do some people lose theirs?

Let's find out, on today's episode of...

Vamos descobrir, no episódio de hoje de...

"Colossal Questions."

"Perguntas Colossais."

In order to understand why people can go deaf over time,

you first need to know how your ears work.

A human ear has three different areas:

Um ouvido humano tem três áreas diferentes:

the outer, middle, and inner ear.

o ouvido externo, médio e interno.

The outer ear picks up sound waves from the air around it

O ouvido externo capta as ondas sonoras do ar ao redor

and moves them along your ear canal to the middle ear,

where the sound waves vibrate the eardrum,

onde as ondas sonoras vibram o tímpano,

sending the sound along to the inner ear.

enviando o som para o ouvido interno.

Next, the sound makes its way to the cochlea,

which is a hollow, spiraled bit of bone

that's full of fluid

cheio de fluido

and lined with thousands of microscopic hairs.

e revestido com milhares de pelos microscópicos.

The hair cells take in the sound and make it louder,

As células ciliadas captam o som e o tornam mais alto,

sending it to your brain so you can hear it.

enviando-o para o seu cérebro para que você possa ouvi-lo.

There are three basic types of hearing loss.

Existem três tipos básicos de perda auditiva.

The first is called conductive,

O primeiro é chamado condutiva,

which is any kind of problem with the outer or middle ear,

where sound can't make it to the inner ear.

This type of hearing loss is usually temporary

and will go away either with treatment or on its own.

The second is called sensorineural hearing loss,

O segundo é chamado de perda auditiva neurossensorial,

which is when there's a problem

que é quando há um problema

with the inner ear's connection to the brain,

and happens when the tiny little hairs

e acontece quando os minúsculos pelos

in the inner ear are damaged.

no ouvido interno são danificados.

This kind of hearing damage is usually permanent.

The third and final type is central hearing loss,

O terceiro e último tipo é a perda auditiva central,

which is caused by a problem in the brain.

People with central hearing loss

Pessoas com perda auditiva central

have perfectly functioning ears,

têm ouvidos funcionando perfeitamente,

but the brain isn't sending

mas o cérebro não está enviando

or receiving information from them.

ou recebendo informações deles.

This is the most rare and also the hardest kind

of hearing loss to treat.

de perda auditiva de tratar.

People treat these issues in lots of different ways.

As pessoas tratam esses problemas de muitas maneiras diferentes.

Some people just need to take medication

Algumas pessoas só precisam tomar medicação

to help their hearing return.

para ajudar sua audição a retornar.

Others have to use hearing aids or other devices instead.

For those who can't hear even with a device,

they might have an operation

eles podem fazer uma cirurgia

to put in something called a cochlear implant.

para colocar algo chamado implante coclear.

It's a really small gadget

É um dispositivo muito pequeno

that surgeons insert into the inner ear.

que os cirurgiões inserem no ouvido interno.

The implant does the job the hairs are meant to do,

turning sounds into electronic signals

transformando sons em sinais eletrônicos

that are sent to the brain,

que são enviados ao cérebro,

allowing the damaged ear to hear again.

permitindo que o ouvido danificado ouça novamente.

So, why do people go deaf?

Então, por que as pessoas ficam surdas?

Well, there's lots of different reasons it can happen,

but it's important to remember that in today's world,

there's all sorts of technology to help the hard of hearing

live a perfectly normal life.

a viver uma vida perfeitamente normal.

And who knows what the future holds?
